The First 15%

Deming“The success of any venture depends heavily on its beginning. By focusing on the first 15%, the remaining 85% will effortlessly follow.”   –W. Edwards Deming

‘Effortlessly’ is a great exaggeration, but my experience [based on both hits and misses] says that this is as close to an immutable fact as can be served up by the ambiguous world we operate in. The goal should be to gather info, think, plan – and then get moving. Planning is a critical and dynamic process. Often the best ideas happen in course correction while relentlessly tacking toward the goal. There is no such thing as having all the facts, or in today’s world – most of the facts. And if you had them yesterday, chances are they’re slightly different today.  Plan – and then continue planning while on the move.
